barry mcgee

barry mcgee is one of my favorite artists, and i'll finally get to see his work in miami later this month as part of the wynwood walls project:

his installations are my favorite--somehow even though his work is really graphic, the way it's arranged is so sensitive and fluid:

Cripple

Once when I saw a cripple
Gasping slowly his last days with the white plague,
Looking from hollow eyes, calling for air,
Desperately gesturing with wasted hands
In the dark and dust of a house down in a slum,
I said to myself
I would rather have been a tall sunflower
Living in a country garden
Lifting a golden-brown face to the summer,
Rain-washed and dew-misted,
Mixed with the poppies and ranking hollyhocks,
And wonderingly watching night after night
The clear silent processionals of stars.

support public art!

a video message from asheville artist dustin spagnola:

donate to this project if you can--it's a really great way for asheville to be a part of the larger contemporary art scene and for local artists to collaborate across disciplines/backgrounds/statelines.
